We had the best time at Lanzerac Hotel & Spa [ad] during our entire trip in the Western Cape region. The hotel is high-priced, but provides incredible comfort that we have only found in a few places in the world. It is our favorite Stellenbosch wine estate .
Location and arrival at Stellenbosch Wine Estate Lanzerac Hotel & Spa
Lanzerac Hotel & Spa is located on the outskirts of the famous city of Stellenbosch - known for its world-class wine estates. Stellenbosch with its approximately 20,000 inhabitants is one of the most renowned wine-growing regions in the world and has an incredible history in wine cultivation.
Lanzerac Hotel & Spa is a good 50 kilometers from Cape Town. The journey by car takes just under an hour. Roads are well developed and traffic is ok. Driving is very pleasant and relaxed. When you cross the gate to the Wine Estate Lanzerac Hotel & Spa in Stellenbosch and drive up the avenue to the property, you enter a completely separate and isolated world. Peace and relaxation in the middle of the vineyards, which produce the delicious stuff that we all love so much.
Arriving by public transport is rather difficult. Uber works quite well both from Cape Town to Stellenbosch and within Stellenbosch. The first choice for getting to Lanzerac is by rental car.
Once you have arrived and put your legs up with a glass of Méthode Cape Classique (cape champagne), you will realize the beauty of Lanzerac Hotel & Spa.
Equipment and design of the Lanzerac Hotel & Spa
There are four different room categories at Lanzerac Hotel & Spa: Classic Room, Luxury Room, Junior Suite and Suite. The suites have their own pool in a small garden. All rooms are individually designed, but follow a common line in terms of design. Historic furniture combined with a few modern elements and technical amenities in a wonderful garden landscape. The hotel has a total of 53 rooms and nine pools. Around 160 employees read every wish from the guests' lips. After a fire in parts of the property, Lanzerac Hotel & Spa was fundamentally redesigned and the result is stunning.
We had a suite called "Rick's Cottage" - really stunning and absolutely quiet. The entrance area consists of a hallway and an anteroom, which also works as an office and living room. Two comfortable armchairs, a secretaire, a couch and a large flat screen TV as well as tea and coffee maker.
In the bedroom, you will enjoy a huge, comfortable king-size bed. There´s another living room with a fireplace and comfortable armchairs with a view of the garden.
Outside, there is a terrace with a pavilion and great garden furniture. Without exception, all furniture used is really beautiful and we would have loved to take it with us.
The bathroom has a great double sink with large mirrors. From the free-standing bathtub you have a stunning view of the vineyards. The spacious rain shower is also really fun. The toilet is separated from the rest of the bathroom by a glass door.
Every booking includes wine tasting, shuttle service to Stellenbosch, mini bar including daily replenishment, breakfast and evening turn-down service. We especially love the turn-down service. Imagine coming back to your room after dinner - the lights are dimmed, the bed is freshly made and there is a cup of tea and a little treat in form of a candy on the bedside table. In Bavaria we call that a Betthupferl.

Lanzerac Wine Tasting
Since you are here in a renowned winery, you should definitely taste the delicious wines. Choose from various tasting options in the relaxed atmosphere of the Deli's terrace. We opted for the Lanzerac Premium Tasting and the Heritage Tasting. The Premium tasting let you choose five wines from a list of eight and thereby you decide whether your tasting comes with more white or red wine.
Alternatively, you can choose the Lanzerac Heritage Tasting with Lanzerac's top wines. In this option four preselected wines are to be tested. The Lanzerac Wine & Chocolate Tasting also sounds very promising.
Our favorite white wine is Mrs. English - a Chardonnay. When it came to red wine, Le Général and Pioneer Pinotage were our favorites. We took some bottles home with us.
Tasting is included in the price for hotel guests. Most of the participants of the wine tasting are probably day guests. Order a small snack from the deli, if you are hungry. We had a mixed snack plate with ham, salami and various cheeses. We also had homemade bread from the Delis bakery.
Lanzerac cellar tour
Before or after the tasting, a cellar tour through the impressive halls of the winery is highly recommendable. An employee will guide you through the rooms and tell about the story of Lanzerac. Also expect a little introduction in the production of the wines. During the harvest season from late January to March, you can also look over the shoulders of the winemakers.
Lanzerac SPA
The SPA is located in a historic building on the edge of the vineyards. On the ground floor, you will find an indoor pool and a jacuzzi as well as a steam cabin, a sauna and a gym, where you can work off the calories of the excellent kitchen. There is also a wonderful terrace right by the vineyard. The lay beds and all other furniture are of highest quality - just like towels and bathrobes. A small bar with fresh and healthy snacks and drinks takes care of your physical well-being.
The area for massages and cosmetic applications is on the upper floor.
We had an Aroma Wine Pinotage Massage. It was the best massage we have ever had.
If you like it a little more active, hike in the mountains or explore the area on a mountain bike.
Culinary at Lanzerac Wine Estate in Stellenbosch
Lanzerac Hotel & Spa offers a lot in aculinary way.
In addition to the Manor Kitchen, where breakfast and dinner are served, you can enjoy the delicacies of the region in Lanzerac Deli, in the Taphuis Bar or in the Craven Lounge.

We always moved our breakfast to the terrace of the Taphuis to enjoy the warm morning sun. Just lovely. The cold buffet with sweet pastries and a wonderful selection of different sourdough breads also offers oysters, MCC (Cape champagne), salmon, a large selection of sausages and cheese. You can also order various hot dishes like eggs or oatmeal from the breakfast menu.
This breakfast is truly one of the best hotel breakfasts, we have ever had.
Manor Kitchen also serves dinner a la carte in addition to breakfast. The selection is small but exquisite. We had beef tartare as a starter, venison and lamb as a main course. The quality of all dishes we tested was very good.
In Lanzerac Deli you can have breakfast all day, but also very tasty sandwich creations, quiches or pies are offered. There are also great burgers, salads and bowls. Even great offers for vegetarians and vegans are available.
At coffee or high tea time, you will find sweet dishes for every taste in the display.
The Taphuis Bar is a small, very fine pub-style restaurant with a small but very appealing menu. In the well-stocked bar, you will find a large selection of local and international drinks. The decor is in the style of an old country house with a cozy fireplace. The meals offered are also reminiscent of typical pub snacks, but at the highest level: snacks, burgers, steak and fish are served.
As another option, you are free to spend time in the Craven Lounge Bar. Here too, the furnishings are absolutely inviting and perfectly coordinated. Lay back in one of the comfortable armchairs or couches and listen to the crackle of the fire in the fireplace with a South African tapas plate and a glass of red wine. Here you will also find fine whiskeys, gins and cognacs. A unique atmosphere.
