Before our trip around the world with almost 30 flights, many boat and bus trips and almost 100 hotel nights, we asked ourselves how we could make the whole trip more pleasant.
Who does not know it? You have a night flight and cannot fall asleep even after the third glass of red wine. The background noise on the plane is just too loud to fall into sleep mode.
We're 28 and 33 now and we simply don't want to do without a certain level of comfort. Especially when it comes to sleep, we have become sensitive and need rest in order to be able to relax and fall asleep.
However, this is not always possible when traveling, so we looked around for a remedy.
So we were looking for headphones that are particularly suitable for traveling.
We tried out a few models at our local electronics dealer. After a few tests in the store, we were faced with the choice of in-ear or over-ear and wireless or not and normal or noise-canceling?
We then opted for wireless in-ears with noise canceling.
The Sony WF-1000XM3 [ad] The Sony WF-1000XM3 [ad] accompanied us on the entire trip and gave us many hours of sleep that we would otherwise not have had. Sony provided us with the headphones .
The design of the Sony WF-1000XM3 is really very classy.
We opted for black headphones in a black charging case with a rose-gold lid. This combination is very successful. Instead of black, you can also choose cream-white. This option looks great too.
The charging box is pleasantly small and handy, so that it fits easily in a man's pocket - in a woman's handbag.
The headphones are also pleasantly small and well adapted to the auricle.
To establish a Bluetooth connection for the first time, you simply take the headphones out of the box and put them in your ears. You will automatically switch to pairing mode. Now all you have to do is select the WF-1000XM3 in the Bluetooth menu of your mobile phone (or other devices) and you're ready to go. You get a message "Bluetooth connected" in your ear.
If you want to establish a connection with an additional device, put the two headphones in your ears and place your finger on both touch sensors so that pairing mode is activated. Wait until you get the message for pairing mode in your ear and connect your device to the WF-1000XM3.
There it was. Very easy and super reliable.
Be sure to download the Headphones app. With this you can determine the occupancy of the left and right touch sensors. You can assign one of the following options to the touch sensors.
Ambient noise control - you can choose between the three modes Noise-Canceling, Ambience Sound and Ambience Sound Control Off by tapping the touch sensor.
Playback control - this option allows you to play / pause, next song, previous song and voice assistant (e.g. Siri).
Volume control - there is not much to explain. Tapping increases the volume. Holding down lowers the volume.
Otherwise, there is also the option of placing the Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa on one of the two touch sensors.
I have the ambient noise control on the left touch sensor and the volume on the right.
Since the latest update, you can see the charge status of the earpods and the battery status of the charging box in the app. Very practical because there was no way to do this before.
Otherwise you still have the opportunity to adjust the noise reduction and the equalizer manually.
You can also activate DSEE HX to increase the sound quality again.
Notification and voice guidance are possible in 15 languages - including German and English.
I found another setting very practical: You can choose between "Optimal sound quality" and "Stable connection", which can be particularly useful in fast-moving means of transport.
The earpods switch on automatically when you take them out of the charging case and automatically pair with your device if it is already known.
As already mentioned, my standard setting switches the noise suppression mode on the left touch sensor and the right touch sensor controls the volume. Of course you can adapt this to your preferences, but in the following I will assume the settings that have been tried and tested for me.
With a tap on the left touchpad you change the mode of the noise cancellation.
Noise canceling switches off ambient noise by using a microphone to measure the ambient noise and suppress it. Above all, monotonous high and low noises are almost 100% eliminated. Voices can still be heard muffled.
With a tap on the left earpod you switch to the ambience sound mode so that you can hear all ambient noises again. This is very useful when someone speaks to you or you want to hear an announcement on the plane or in the subway.
The adaptive noise control recognizes whether you are currently moving (walking, car, train) or whether you are standing still and adjusts the level of noise suppression to provide an optimal sound experience.
If you remove the headphones, playback will stop automatically. This function can be deactivated. This makes sense, for example, if you only want to hear with an earpod. As a side sleeper, this always suits me when falling asleep.
The only disadvantage is that it is not yet an option to use it with board entertainment on the plane, as these systems are not yet Bluetooth-enabled. Even with a Bluetooth transmitter that can be connected to the aircraft screen via a jack, only audio can also be used. If you want to watch films or series on the plane, you can't avoid headphones with a jack cable, as with the current Bluetooth technology, a large time lag between sound and image prevents pleasant viewing. But as I said, this is not the fault of the Sony WF-1000XM3, but rather the Bluetooth technology itself.
Seven different ears are included in the scope of delivery. With the many different rubber and foam attachments, every ear shape will find a suitable counterpart.
In my opinion, the headphones are quite comfortable to wear on the plane, because in contrast to the over-ear, it is much more comfortable to lean against the headrest or a pillow. Falling asleep is really great with the Sony WF-1000XM3. Even if you sleep restlessly, the plugs stay where they belong. Above all, you don't have the well-known problem with sweating with the over-ears with the small earpods.
The low weight of 8.5 g per earpod ensures good wearing comfort.
A decisive argument for the Sony WF-1000XM3 was for me the battery life of more than six hours with full noise-canceling mode.
If that's not enough for you, the charging box recharges enough battery in about ten minutes so that you can listen to another 90 minutes. Overall, the battery capacity of the box is sufficient for more than three full earpod charges. In my tests, I achieved significantly better values.
The charging socket has a USB type C charging socket.
The earpods charge via induction in the charging box and slide really loosely into position due to magnetism. A very good solution.
The product comes with a range of different rubber and foam attachments in different sizes. Just try the essays and find the one that's best for you.
Only the optimal attachment offers optimal noise canceling and the best sound quality.
I loved the sound quality. Both high and low notes are reproduced cleanly.
The Sony WF-1000XM3 were an essential companion on our three month journey. We really used them several times a day and put them through their paces.
The noise canceling works perfectly, the Bluetooth connection is fast and reliable and the battery power is great. The handy charging box can be easily stowed in the trouser pocket, backpack or seat pocket of the aircraft.
Countless flights, boat, bus and train trips as well as noisy hotel neighbors no longer rob us of rest or sleep.
We are very satisfied with the product and recommend the WF-1000XM3 to every traveler.
